Onomacation: 文字の動きで伝える日本のオノマトペ

卒業制作のテーマとして、以前から興味を持っていた日本のオノマトペを選択しました。文字の動きとアニメーションを組み合わせることにより、日本のオノマトペの直感的で豊かな表現力を、普遍的なコミュニケーションツールとして表現することを目的としています。

主な制作物は、キネティックタイポグラフィを軸とする５分間のアニメーション、アニメーションで使用しているオノマトペを英訳した付属本、５種のポストカードと展示用の特大ポスター。オノマトペは５０音それぞれの文字から始まる単語を、『日本語オノマトペ辞典』（小野正弘著）より選択しました。

英語のオノマトペが主に”音”を模倣しているのに対し、日本のオノマトペはより感覚的で、感情や状態など、抽象的な事柄を伝えるのに適しています。オノマトペ研究の第一人者、田守育啓は著書『オノマトペ擬音・擬態語をたのしむ』でオノマトペが特に日本で広く使われる理由を「簡潔かつ包括的で、臨場感のある具体的な表現力」にあると語っています。例えば、肉まん売り場の横に「ホカホカ〜」と書いてあれば、その肉まんが「暖かくて、ジューシーで、美味しそう」だというイメージを私たちの多くは一瞬で感じ取ることができるでしょう。私たち日本人が共有するその感覚を、シンプルなアニメーションと文字の組み合わせで表現し、日本語や日本文化に馴染みのない人たちと共有することを目指しました。

物語について

この短編アニメーションの主人公は、関東の小さな街で人生の大半を過ごしている私の母です。私はニューヨークに住み始めてから約8年経ちますが、ニューヨークの人たちのエネルギーにはいまだに圧倒されるばかり—地下鉄の車内で大音量のブレークダンス、自転車専用道を逆走する警察の馬、人力で移動する屋台のカート—そんな人たちを目撃するたびに「お母さんが見たらびっくりするだろうな。どんなリアクションするかな？」といつも想像していました。

物語の中で、電話番号のメモをなくしてしまった母は、JFK空港から娘の住むハーレムまで自力でたどり着くことを決意します。英語を話さない母は初めて訪れたニューヨークで、オノマトペを使って道を聞いたり、驚きを表現します。内向的な私と違い、私の母は実際に、家の近所でヒッチハイクしていた外国人を、車に乗せて身振り手振りでコミュニケーションをとり、ホテルまで送り届けたことがあるほど社交的で明るく、母なら実際にニューヨークでもどうにかなるだろう、と楽しく想像しながら制作にあたりました。

大学の卒業制作に、個人的で身近な母親を題材としたのは、私のように普通の人たちの小さな物語は、それぞれ同様に大切で、また、共感を呼ぶ力を持つと考えたからです。同時に、私たち日本人がオノマトペを使ってどのように感じ、表現しているかを、異なる言語や文化を持つ人たちと共有することで、多様な文化に触れる驚きや新しい発見の楽しさを伝えたいと考えました。

制作にあたって

2019年の11月に卒業制作の企画書を提出し、2020年の1月から制作に取り掛かりました。コロナウイルスのために大学が閉鎖されたのが3月、それから約１ヶ月は自分自身も体調を崩し、この物語を制作する意味を自問し続ける毎日でした。企画の時点では、私の大好きなニューヨークの、めちゃくちゃなパワーと人たちを描きたいと考えていたはずが、街は空っぽになり、毎日数千人規模の死者が報道されるのを横目に制作意欲を保つのは難しく、数週間投げ出した状態にもなりました。今もまだ普通の生活からは程遠い状態で、先の見えない不安を抱えている人たちがたくさんいます。この物語を通じて、かつてのタフで明るいニューヨークの感覚を、より多くの人たちと共有できるよう願いながら制作しました。

展示用ポスターのデザイン見本。実際のサイズは約幅3メートル、高さ約1メートルの予定。企画内容とデザインを同時に見せるのが狙い。

制作後の感想

実際に制作を初めてからまず初めに、言語の違いの難しさに改めて気づかされました。飛行機の音「キーン」をアルファベットでKiinと表現したのですが、英語を使う人たちにとっては必ずしも日本語のカタカナ読みのようにKi-i-i-nと読むわけではないからです。企画の段階では、説明的な音声は使用しない予定でしたが、教授やクラスメイトの助言を元に、実際に母の声を録音し、読み方の声に文字のタイミングを合わせる方法に切り替えました。

次の段階では、オノマトペの単語を読む速度は数秒なのに対し、その単語が持つ”感覚”を文字の動きで表現するためにはより長い時間が必要なため、声の速度を変えず、１つのシーンで文字をループさせたり、声を複数回挿入することで解決方法を探りました。

制作前には、日本的で抽象的な感覚を文字と動きで表現することの難しさを懸念していましたが、アニメーションと組み合わせることで、意外にもすんなりと日本語に馴染みがない人たちにも直感的に理解してもらうことができました。

オノマトペのように、自分にとってはなじみ深いテーマを、コミュニケーションデザインを通じて、いかに他言語、他文化の対象に伝えるか、またその難しさをこの卒業制作で学びました。

Onomacation: Japanese Onomatopoeia Visualization

Abstract: Onomatopoeic expressions (the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named) are widespread in Japan; however, in some cultures, e.g. the US, the use of these expressions is often perceived as immature. My project will visualize Japanese onomatopoetic words in a 5-minute, 2D vector-based animation using kinetic typography as a narrative tool.

This animation is intended for non-Japanese speakers because one of the goals of my project is introducing different cultural perspectives on interpretation and language of sounds and feelings by using onomatopoeia. In addition to the animation, I will create a typography-based 48-page booklet with Japanese four-hole binding. The booklet will be a reference for viewers and will explain all of the onomatopoeia words in my animation. The collaterals will include a muralstyle illustration/typography black and white poster, which depicts the NYC cityscape, and five different designs of postcards consisting of illustrations and typography of onomatopoetic words.

Story

The protagonist in my animation is my mother, who is in her 70s and living in a small town in the countryside of Japan. Although my mother has never come to New York, I have often been imagining how she would react if she saw people and things in NYC that she has never encountered in her life. So, this is my imagination of my mother’s adventure from JFK to Harlem, where I live. Since she doesn’t speak English, she feels and expresses sounds and things using Japanese onomatopoeia, which I think could be a universal narrative communication tool.

Background

I started planning my thesis in November 2019, when I had no idea what would be happening in the coming year. After New York was shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I really struggled with working on my project since one of my main themes is depicting the lively people and vigorous power of NYC. I asked myself the meaning of illustrating dancing people on the subway and crazy energy in Times Square while news kept telling me the enormous numbers of deaths and showing photos of empty cities every day. Now, it’s been almost a month after the lockdown started, and nobody really knows yet how long this crisis will last and what will come after this. However, I could say, New York will not be the same as before and after this event. Although I have not found answers for anything so far, I am determined to move on and I would like to share with viewers an optimistic touch of New York City, which I always love, through my creations.
